Protectorate

The relation of a strong state toward a weaker state or territory.

One could argue that the United States is a protectorate of the nation of South Korea.

Adulterate

To debase or make impure by adding inferior materials or elements.
Use cheaper, inferior materials in the production of a product.

I believe that their group made a point to save money by choosing to adulterate the specifications agreed upon.

Traverse

To pass or move over.
To go to and fro over or along.
To extend across or over.
