Pathos

The quality or power in actual life experience or in literature, music, speech, or other forms of expression.
Pity.

He was determined to avoid the pathos that usually accompanied his dissertation on the material.

Unravel

To separate or disentangle the threads.
To free from complication or difficulty.
To take apart; undo; destroy.

It was unfortunate to be part of watching the process unravel in such a fashion. 

Cipher

Any of the Arabic numerals or figures.
Something of no value or importance.
To write in or as in cipher. 

It was of little cipher when I learned of the results.
